2/3/05

Still no let up in the arctic conditions up here on Haytor.

Since the 19th Feb I have had 11 days with snow falling and lots of occasions
with a full cover. Nothing ever deeper than 2 cm at a time but it has almost
become normal to see snow now. No rain has fallen since 18th February, all
precipitation has either been sleet or snow, mainly snow.

Yesterday evening on March 1st came home to snow with the snow line 20m above
our house, went out for a walk and on returning snow line was 10m below our
house ! Snow had melted by midnight, only to be replaced by a sprinkling this
morning and another 1 cm fall this evening.

Since the 19th every single day has had a frost and the highest day max in the
period has been 5.7 deg C on the 26th.

Night minima are as follows:

20/2 -1.6
21/2 -2.0
22/2 -2.0
23/2 -2.8
24/2 -1.7
25/2 -3.0
26/2 -2.2
27/2 -2.3
28/2 -4.5
01/3 -0.8
02/3 -2.3

Throughout this period the ground has beeen frozen solid apart from a temporary
thaw last weekend.

1 cm soil temps at 1800 a

20/2 -0.3
21/2 -0.4
22/2 -0.2
23/2 -0.7
24/2 -0.3
25/2 -0.4
26/2 +1.4
27/2 -0.4
28/2 -0.5
01/3 +0.1
02/3 -0.5

OK compared to some parts of the country this is unremarkable, but for the
normally mild SW part of Britain it is quite cold, though Dartmoor has often
seen more severe conditions than these.

Plant growth has stopped and Spring seems a long way off.

2230 data

Temp -1.0 deg C
Dewpoint -4 deg C
Wind - calm !!!
Weather - light powder snow
Visibility - moderate
Bar - 1009.1 hPa - rising quickly
Snow depth - full cover at 1cm.

Inside temperature 16.0 deg C

From a pristine white and wintry Haytor,

Will.
