uk.sci.weather (UK Weather) (uk.sci.weather) For the discussion of daily weather events, chiefly affecting the UK and adjacent parts of Europe, both past and predicted. The discussion is open to all, but contributions on a practical scientific level are encouraged. |

Dear All,
I've just installed a mini data logger in my thermometer screen. The logger can record up to 7900 readings. At present I have set it to take a temperature reading every 3 minutes. I know a data logger 'samples' instead of recording continuously like a Thermograph trace but in order to end up with a weekly plot similar to a Thermograph is a reading every 3 minutes sufficient ? Regards Richard |

Regards Richard The old spiral bimetal thermographs had quite a long time constant, although I never measured it, and it would vary with air velocity, I would guess it to be in the region of 10mins (66%). I would suggest you could easily increase sampling time to 6 mins, and of course it would also depend on the time constant of your sensors and how well they are ventilated. If you have access to the thermograph, It would be interesting to expose both it and the data logger to a steady state low temp for a period of say 4hrs such as experienced early this morning outside (2deg C), and then to bring them both indoors into a warm unventilated room at say 20deg C subjecting them both to a step change temp. For the purpose of the experiment you could set your datalogger to sample at 1 minute intervals. Good luck, maybe you could let us know the results? Cheers Tom |
