The Azores High was displaced north-eastwards and was
centred at 47N 13W (i.e. SW of Scilly) at 1026 mbar. The Icelandic Low was scarcely detectable (1007 mbar), and the main low centre in the sector was deep in the Russian Arctic at 994 mbar. There was also a shallow low 1010 mbar between the Azores and Bermuda. Over the British Isles mean sea-level pressure ranged from 1012 mbar in Shetland to 1024 mbar at Scilly and Valentia, and the mean flow was WNW-ly. The main anomaly centres we +12 mbar sea-area Shannon -12 mbar in the Russian Arctic -6 mbar between the Azores and Bermuda Over the British Isles anomalies ranged from +5 mbar in Shetland to +11 mbar on the west coast of Ireland. The anomalous flow was NW-ly roughly north of latitude 54degN, and NE-ly to the south of it. In the last 50 years only November 2001 was more anticyclonic over our lat/long block. CET (prov) 7.7șC (+0.8 degC) EWP (prov) 51.8mm (52%) EWS (prov) 51.5 h (78%) It was the driest November by this measure since 1988, and the dullest since 1997. Valley (Anglesey) had its dullest November since the station opened in 1945. Locally in northeast England it was the driest Nov since 1958. More details at www.climate-uk.com/page2.html Philip Eden |

I concur with all you have written about December - though am still wondering about the SST's and their longer term effect on the Winter as a whole. Cheers, James -- James Brown |
