I've calculated Langtoft at 74, which seems remarkably high in comparison
with others. Is this a local thing? Is so I suspect that the figure for the North York Moors would be enormous judging from the depth of snow and its persistence well into March. -- David Mitchell, 70m amsl, Langtoft, East Riding of Yorkshire. |

... I've tabulated below the totals for Luton for the last 15 years. It shows that the winter just past (which, of course, may or may not yet be over) had an index well below one-third of the overall mean here, notwithstanding the frequency of snow in late-Feb and early-Mar. 1995-96 31 367 1996-97 16 160 1997-98 1 65 1998-99 4 48 1999-2000 5 108 2000-01 39 305 2001-02 2 97 2002-03 15 133 2003-04 18 107 2004-05 17 273 Mean 15 166 Hi, Philip, My figures, alongside yours for the past 10 years. There is the obvious, and expected, increase with height and location, but they do seem to show some sort of similarity. When I have time, inclination and my record books back (they are loaned out atm) I will work out a SI for my old site at Low Etherley (155m) since 1970. In spite of the height differences, it was definitely snowier there in the good old days! 1978 - 1979 had an index of 956 for example, but that was particularly bad, in fact the equivalent day to today, Monday 19th March 1979 had 45cm, village isolated for much of the day and my second son was born - but that is another story! How times change, 26 today! Best wishes, -- Ken Cook, Copley (5miles north of Barnard Castle), County Durham. 830ft http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/copley (MO climat. site updated before 10Z and 19Z daily) kencookATcopleydurham.freeserve.co.uk (All times GMT) |
