Default "Vortex" in Wimbledon

Dear All

Picnic-ing with friends this afternoon watching cricket, and through the
trees came a low-level swirl, travelling probably at about 10-15mph with
what I would guess 30mph winds travelling round it. Is this a land devil or
something like this? Not really familiar with the terminology - certainly
had the strength to take one or two leaves off the trees as it passed
through the cricket pitch, where the cricketers stood around looking
mightily confused.

Any thoughts?
Richard

Hi Rich,
something similar happened outside the house in Catford last Wednesday 16Z ish-rapidly swirling
litter in a vortex maybe 10 m across .I assumed it was a thermal lifting off and rotating.I wasn't
able to ascertain whether it was 'travelling'.As yrs was it and in open country sounds like a 'land
devil'.I assume land devils are unlikely in built up urban areas (?)

Probably a land or "dust devil". I have a bunch of photos and a movie
sequence:
