Why does the date have to be superimposed on the image when there is any amount of room on the page for that sort of thing? So that when you use the animation feature you know the date/time you are viewing without having to reload the whole page. All that changes is the displayed image. You might not have realised that there are animation buttons though, the top 1/4 of the standard rewind forward stop play buttons is hacked off in my browser. -- Cheers Dave. pam is missing e-mail |

Anyone seen the "new" weather style of the BBC forecasts? Very 2 dimensional. The ITV messed around with a much more interesting format last year. And to cap it all they still send the bloody fools up on the damned roof. What is that gasometer thing? What a horrible colour....yuck. And whats with the JPEG compression artefacts in the maps? Horrible. |

Thank you for your e-mail regarding the BBC Weather.
I understand that you dislike the new format that we have adopted. Let me assure you that our audience told us that while they enjoyed the weather as it was, regarding the BBC forecasts as the most reliable and authoritative, they wanted some extra clarity and more detail. This system will bring weather forecasting up to date. By using one central database rather than separate systems it will eradicate national and regional discrepancies and make the system more efficient, easier to understand and more engaging. The aim of the new system is to make the weather as clear and as easy to understand as possible. That means making the weather (cloud, rain, sunshine etc), as prominent as possible and stripping away other information which detracts from the weather forecast. So we've kept the elevation of the maps (mountains etc) but we've taken away variations in colour which come from using standard satellite photography. That means you can't see the difference between deserts or green fields for example, but the weather over both is clearer and easier to understand. We appreciate that at first, many of our viewers will find the new maps unusual and perhaps difficult to understand. However, over time, as with all new technology we feel that this problem will become less frequent. I appreciate that you may continue to disagree over our decision to implement a new system, rest assured that your views have been registered and form part of our daily feedback to programme makers and BBC management. Comments such as yours help us plan future programmes. Thank you for contacting the BBC. Standard Letter NW-3, pre-written months ago. With our help, they'll sort it out eventually. Simple things like a brown coloured UK are certain to be changed - basic and obvious but completely missed in the pilot testing etc. Such is life - as always with new software/hardware/systems. We'll have to give 'em time but let's keep our "observations" (complaints!) going until they get it right. -- Dave |
