Current temp (11.45BST) is just 10.1C with steady moderate rain for the last two
hours. No sign of any sunshine for the next hour or so. This May is surely going to be one of the coldest in the last 30 or so years. Only May 1996 comes close so far. It has been a long time since the air thickness & 850mB air temps have been so low for so long at this time of the year. The last couple of days is the first time since the beginning of the month that the 850mB air temp has risen above freezing! I counted at least 7 nights where a frost occurred here! That's never happened before in my records going back to 1979. My prediction for this summmer: unless the jet stream unlocks itself and dramatically changes direction, certainly not the heatwave predicted in the media which (surprise, surprise) started appearing just after that BBC scaremongering rubbish was broadcast) but a cool or even cold and grey summer with the odd day or two of warmer weather a-la 1978/1979; and cold north winds will predominate due to complex low pressure areas being in semi-permanent residence over north-western mainland Europe feeding us with a cold north or north-easterly flow. As a result, the south-east could suffer from drought as most rain will fall in the north. The cause: a locked jet stream streaming down straight from the North Pole over the U.K. which has been the (almost unbroken) case for the last four months. If it hadn't been for the sunshine during the last three weeks, the max. daytime temp would not have reached 10C - more like 5-6C as the 850mB air temp was -5C or lower for most of that time, with -10C air just off the north coast of Scotland for several days. Nigel Aagh! Every time I learn something new... it pushes something old out of my brain! |

With the warm start to the month and mild nights likely for the next week or so the month might not finish up too far from average, even if one's gut feeling might suggest otherwise. Regards, Roger |

Regards, Roger Hmmm.. yes! As you say it looks like the predicted warm days/nights next week could even things out a bit. Note the interesting stats on that site for the anomalies 10th-20th: i.e. temp 9.8C (-1.4C), sunshine 96% but look at the rainfall.. just 55%! Even so, I don't think I can ever remember so many consecutive night frosts in May before! BTW, in spite of a considerable amont of sunshine, it's only 14.3C here now! Oh, and we had a couple of rumbles of thunder yesterday in the midst of the four-hour deluge! Next-door neighbour's garage was flooded by gallons of water running down their garage door & then being blown in under the door by the stiff wind! For quite a while it looked like the downpour was fairly localised as there were brighter skies to the south/south-east. Cheers, Nigel Aagh! Every time I learn something new... it pushes something old out of my brain! |
