I would say funnel clouds, in as much as we _do_ get them but they're
pretty rare and you have to be in the right place at the right time.

chuckle Yes, I'd forgotten about snow. In fairness, the OP asked
about _rare_ weather, not impossible weather :-)

Hurricanes?!

But if you mean a rare study rather than a rare event then you could measure
the ozone above the UK.

Other less exotic studies are soil temperature, pan evaporation, and lunar
luminesence due to the Earth's albedo.
The spectrum of back radiation from the greenhouse effect (it should be
increasing due to global warming) is one that interests me at the moment.

If you care to elaborate on which aspects of weather you find most interesting
then I am sure we could think up a project for you.

Cheers, Alastair.

Probably the rarest (and incidentally also the prettiest) are colourful
nacreous clouds also called polar stratospheric clouds. They appear at
very high altitude 10-20km as brightly coloured iridescent sculpted
lenticular clouds long after sunset (or before sunrise).

They may be becoming more frequent over the UK if some predictions of GW
effects on the stratosphere are correct. I am interested in reports and
photographs of any sightings.

A complete list of all known UK displays is on my website:

http://www.nezumi.demon.co.uk/nacreous/3/nacreous3.htm

It is not a long list. Apart from just after Krakatoa 1884-5 the average
is roughly one per decade from the UK mostly in January or February.
Slightly better chance of seeing them from N Scotland.

This year was very good for them over Iceland.

Regards,
Martin Brown

Nacreous cloud, noctilucent cloud, supercell thunderstorms, glazed
frost, diamond dust, tornadoes greater than T7 (else surprisingly
common!), prolonged drought (?),haloes that aren't 22 degrees,
remarkable showers....
