Weatherman Gambles on No Snow for Christmas By Sherna Noah, PA Showbusiness Correspondent Weatherman Michael Fish has put his reputation on the line again – betting £1,000 that it will not snow on Christmas Day. Fish, famous for his “what hurricane ?” prediction in 1987, will donate his winnings to the Band Aid appeal. The retired BBC forecaster is making the bet on odds of 14-5, for London. He said: “I’ve been following the speculations with interest over the last few days and whilst I agree that it is looking probable that it will snow in the north, it’s not so likely in London. “For it to be deemed a White Christmas, at least one flake of snow has to fall on the roof of the London weather centre.” The 60-year-old said: “The building itself is situated in central London where temperatures can be several degrees higher than the outer parts of the city due to the high density of the buildings, and therefore it’s unlikely we will see snow this year. “It has not snowed on Christmas Day in London since 1970, so, I am not sure who’s job it is to stand up there and check on Christmas Day, but I hope they are paying them well because it could possibly be a long wait.” -- Paul |

IMHO both are equally dodgy at the mo. Jon. |

they are certainly in 'ramp' mode at the bbc weather site:
--- Let it snow, let it snow It's Official! . The snow showers are expected to start off in the northwest of the UK on Christmas Eve. By Christmas Day, they are expected to be heavier and could crop up almost anywhere with northern and western areas expected to see the majority. While a covering of snow is picturesque, snowmen are fun and 'everybody' seems to want a white Christmas, we are not Scandinavians and snow always brings travel problems. --- I notice now a spell of wet weather expected across the far south for Christmas Eve Wet soggy ground for any wintry showers on the 25th A shame it won't be cold enough on the 24th Will we be seeing some last moment back-tracking going on, i wonder |

I have not bet in years but I got odds of 7/4 against a white Christmas in London. I began to get interested. I am awaiting a call from the bookie for odds on a green Christmas. If I get less than 2/1 I shall have a go despite tonight's forecasts. Come on London weather Centre/ Met office keep dragging these odds down (or up). Never Follow my example though. Just a bit of silliness really. Cheers Paul -- 'Wisest are they that know they do not know.' Socrates. Paul Bartlett FRMetS |
