Hallo, everyone.
The highest temperature recorded on Friday was +40.8C in the town of Lamia in eastern continental Greece. Larisa was close with +40.0C while no Athenian station reported temperatures over +38C (I only recorded +34.6C). The heat was quite bearable with low humidity indices. The sea breeze effect was once again obvious, as inland temperature maxima were as much as 7C lower compared to the coastal areas of Athens: http://users.ntua.gr/jorgalan/jpg/010705highs.jpg Once again, the Aegean isles were notably cooler: Rhodes never exceeded +28.8C while people in Limnos were feeling quite comfortable with +29.2C in the early afternoon hours. The heat is gradually giving way to fresher air masses in the north and the west of the country, while the south and east should see yet another hot day. After Saturday's localised showers and thunderstorms in the north of the country, much of Greece should experience some very heavy downpours of rain accompanied by hail, thunder and, maybe, some tornadic activity or waterspouts on Sunday. Warm or hot spells in summer are often accompanied by an unsettled spell: the end of a hot spell means that fresher air masses need to come in (essentially from the north). This means that there needs to be a low in the east or the southeast of us (essentially the seasonal eastern mediterranean low) that is sometimes locally triggered to deepen by the pass of a trough from our north.
