Default [OT] Le Mistral souffle

The Mistral wind is blowing and some quite high temperatures are being
recorded at Nice Airport -

LFMN 311330Z 24016KT 9999 FEW050 36/11 Q1007 NOSIG

The average at this time of year is between 26 and 28degC, with dew point
depressions of only 4-6degC. The rocky, inland terrain no doubt aiding this
remarkable 36degC.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I didn't think the Mistral could blow from
the southwest (240/16)

Le groupe uk.sci.weather est-il en train de devenir un espace multilingue,
réservé aux seuls polyglottes ?

Mistral certainly in the Rhone valley, e.g. Marseille
http://weather.noaa.gov/weather/current/LFML.html or Orange
http://weather.noaa.gov/weather/current/LFMO.html

Nice wind direction actually WSW - is there some sort of föhn effect from
the hills upwind ? Such a high temperature is surely fairly unusual when
you consider that Nice Airport is almost surrounded by sea.

Note also Cannes http://weather.noaa.gov/weather/current/LFMD.html - RH
15%.

Default Le Mistral souffle

The Mistral is a northerly wind that blows offshore along the Mediterranean
coast from Ebro to Genoa.

Jack,

The pressure setup is correct, with a N/NW gradient. The METAR history shows
a NW through the night but as insolation increases the wind backs, some sort
of coastal effect, sea breeze ?

I am sure you know LFMN, the weather station is pretty much "in the sea".

I may be wrong, but my French friends who live down there emailled me to
draw my attention to it, themselves calling it Le Mistral.

I thought Nice/Monaco area didn't get Mistrals at all, because the
coast curves round and the mountains shelter it (hence this area not
Marseille became the focus for tourist/holiday development). Yes the
airport at Nice is literally right on the seashore.
