Default Warmth returns at last

The temperature reached 21.7C here today ending a run of 12 consecutive
days with below average maxima.

The thermometer did not even exceed 15.5C during the 11 days from the
22nd July to 1st August. I do not know of any 10-day spell at this time
of year (as far back as 1905) in which 16C has not been exceeded at a
site in Aberdeen.

The mean maximum (14.2C) for the last 10 days of July was on a par with
1965 as the coldest of the past 100 years and was only about 0.5C
higher than for the warmest 10-day spell of February 1998.

I know only of the following years (since 1905) in which the mean
maximum for the last 10 days of July was below 16C:

1965 14.2
1970 14.5
1958 14.7

1907 15.3
1914 15.6
1910 15.7
1971 15.7
1918 15.8

Averages have been computed from data published in the Daily Weather
Report availaible to only the nearest degree Celsius or degree
Fahrenheit. 1907-1918 temperatures were recorded at King's College
Observatory in Old Aberdeen while those from 1958-1971 are from Dyce.
The latter would appear to have summer maxima about 0.5C higher than
the former. The average maxima for July 2005 was 0.2C higher at my site
at Hazlehead than at Dyce.

Yes. Uncomfortably hot again. Not looking forward to getting to sleep. (Have
to be up for 3 am start - don't ever think of being a weatrher forecaster!)

Looks nice for tomorrow though.

Trevor, from your comment on today's weather that seems like a threat to
those of us who enjoy it when it is warm and humid.

Regards, Roger

PS Please do not misconstrue that comment.

Can't see why it's a threat?

If today was uncomfortably hot for you, then I took your comment to imply
that tomorrow would be freezing for me.

Not just me, perhaps - we were complaining in the office this afternoon when
someone dared to open a window with the outside temperature barely into the
20s. There is a huge difference in perception and comfort, as we all know
from reading remarks made in usw.

I don't think that things will turn out that bad though tomorrow - and
perhaps our different locations will play a part.

I had two large sash windows and a fire door fullt open in the office
yesterday. Out on site today in my landrover I had both windows fully open
and was still too hot!!

Don't worry you won't freeze. Get in that noon sun, it's a flamin' furnace
at this time of year. (ah but the dog days are nearly over)

BTW the previous Monday in the office I was the only one needing a
sweatshirt the rest of them were in polo shirts!

In really hot weather, I tend to keep most house windows *closed*, as
it's hotter outside than in, only opening them in the evening.

but what is "hot" then for you? In my book anything below 25C doesn't
even come close to being hot... yesterday the thermometer barely touched
the 21C .. *sigh* .. Summer 2005...

It's not so much temperature as sun. If it's sunny May to Sep then there are
very few days that aren't too hot.

Don't get me wrong, I can lounge by a swimming pool or sea in temps of 30C,
and provided I can have a dip thats fine. Most of my spare time is spent
walking or gardening though, and the summer sun is uncomfortable for me to
work in.

One of my best days this year was skiing from Geiterrygen to Fine at 1400M
in Norway in early March in clear blue skies. When I stopped, it was
difficult to move off, it was so pleasant lounging around in the sun. The
temperature was minus 5C.

I suppose my perfect summer day would be sub 546 dm air with a NW wind,
pressure 1020 and rising and breezy with low humidity. However, even then
out walking it would be very hot in the sun traps in valleys or near woods.

I completely agree with you Trevor. Nive to know I'm not alone!

But very boring and restrictive.

Exactly the same here.

I am extremely jealous! I was in Norway towards the beginning of last month
and experienced temperatures of 29.5 on the coast road from Trondheim to
Bodø. That was too hot. Then it rained...

Yes that would suit me too. The thin cloud we fairly often get here in the
mountains is also nice, better than the hot sunshine Aberystwyth (where I
work) often experiences at the same time.

Having said that, in the winter I'd rather have the climate of Aberystwyth,
except of course when it snows!
