Really good news that they all got out.

The METARs suggest a pretty difficult time weatherwise.
As I understand it the aircraft landed on 24L.
Plane landed at 2003Z:

.... I can't understand why the news reports keep talking about 'struck
by lightning'. It is dangerous to speculate without more data, but some
sort of wet runway/lack of adhesion and/or downburst episode is more
likely given these METAR's. As you write, pleased to hear that all
survived - a tribute to aircraft designers and the local emergency
services.

Martin.

A number of witnesses said they saw lightning hit the plane, apparently.

.... I'm not doubting the lightning strikes; what I wonder is why it is
assumed this was the *cause* of the problem - if it was, we'd have
aircraft falling out of the sky every day & careering off runways all
over the world.

Martin.

Quite agree Martin. I have encountered a number of strikes throughout my
career with no adverse affect (apart from jumping out of my own skin).
Looking at the METARS the weather was not pleasant at all, but again there
are so many other factors that may come to light. I can recall one time on
landing, the anti-skid packed up and the spoilers did not deploy. Dry sunny
day, no problem, just a lot of writing in the tech log. Now on a wild wet
day hmmm....

The best news is everyone got out, that is a blessing.

John

I didn't read into the reports that lightning was the cause; it was mentioned,
I took it, as a possible contributing factor.

If the pilot was startled at a crucial moment, might this not have had a
bearing on his ability to control the plane?

.... possible I suppose; perhaps we'd better leave it to the official
investigation.

There's a fascinating report (in realplayer format), with a lot about the
weather, at:

http://www.cbc.ca/clips/rm-lo/crowe_pearson050802.rm (6 minutes long)

This is from:
