Did anyone listen to the R4 programme last night (Saturday 2000) "The
Archive Hour: Time Lapse of Dartmoor"? [Still available via the BBC web
site BTW].

At one point, the people whose reminiscences were recorded were relating
tales surrounding what sounded like a major 'Rain Ice' event during the
1947 winter ... but they called it something like 'Ammel', or 'Hammel',
or 'Hemmel'. Not heard this name before and wondered if anyone had come
across it.

Martin.

I remember the event itself, I was living in Camberley in Surrey then,
and its mentioned in 'Climate and the British Scene'.

Rain fell through a very cold layer, the droplets became supercooled
and froze upon impact with anything solid. So far as we were concerned
it meant quarter inch plates of ice forming on the old lying snow
which we could then lift and throw at one another.

.... sorry, didn't make myself clear - it's the *name* I was querying;
has anyone heard this before? Some sort of Devon dialect word?

Martin.

You did make yourself clear but I forgot to add that I hadn't heard
that term.

That's fascinating. Though it may have affected a smaller area, it
sounds as though in severity it was comparable to the great ice-storm of
January, 1940.

Regards,

.... that's great, thanks. I did do the usual Googling, but obviously
didn't persevere (and was putting the wrong name in as well!).

Have since spoken to my Mum (a Devon lass) but she had not heard of the
word, so perhaps a peculiarly 'Dartmoor' term. I look forward to it's
use on national weather broadcasts ;-)

Martin.
