Two signs of the season in Buckingham: MONDAY: very warm and sunny; late afternoon two nests of ants (small, black) flew. TUESDAY : warm and mostly sunny; combine harvester thundered up our road; later, tractor came down twice with giant trailer-loads of grain. Down here in deepest Dorset a couple of weeks back I was surprized to watch a number of (young?) sparrows actually hovering to catch flying ants in mid-air. Is this unusual or have I just not been observant enough in previous years? |
