Default How are sun totals doing for the south?

Looked like this month would be notably sunny until now in the
Hampshire area.... even yesterday despite the heavy showers was quite
sunny at times.

However the rest of the month - in contrast to the models a few days
ago - looks decidedly overcast, so I doubt the sun totals will now rise
much. So how will the averages look? Still significantly sunnier than
average or only slightly so?

Also with a lot of slightly-warmer-than-average but a few decidedly
cool (6th, 19th, 24th, 25th), and the outlook being average
temperatures, could we be looking at a rarity - a month where the
temperature is not significantly above average?

Nick

.... for our site, currently we are running *minus* 0.3degC on the
whole-month/24hr average, and only some perkier values in the last few
days will help us achieve something above average I think.

I'm surprised you're actually below average, I'd have guessed we were
running on above but only marginally so. Guess cold nights must
influence the 24 hour total (there have been many of those this
month....)

In Penzance about 0.6 degrees above the 1971-2000 norm. (Just about spot on
the 1991-2004 norm, showing how warm recent Augusts have been.)

Only 3 days in August have failed to reach 20 degrees. Currently (13:30 BST)
20.8 and rising. Sunny spells, calml & humid.

55% of normall rainfall so far.

Graham

Philip Eden's site is a good one to keep an eye on to see how the month
fares for rain, temperature and sunshine:-

Looks as if the SW of England is doing quite nicely!

Yes, I do look at Philip's site fairly regularly.

Unexpectedly sunny this afternoon. The stratus broke up this morning, with
no high level cloud above. Plenty of cumulus inland, but virtually unbroken
sunshine on the coast since 14:00, with good visibility. Temperature back to
a respectable 21.5 max in strong sunshine and very little wind.
