Default The expert's opinion on Hurricane Katrina

The "expert" questioned on BBC Radio Ulster this morning was that well know
long range forecaster, Piers Corbyn.

Now the listeners here will know hurricane formation is a result of solar
activity and the bombardment of the upper atmosphere by solar protons and
neutrons.

They were also informed there is little global warming and what there is is
down to solar activity again.

:-(

Someone from the Met this morning on Breakfast although they didn't give him
much time. Darren Bett was also very good on News 24 yesterday - showed
synoptic forecast charts for the hurricane. Probably got a ticking off from
Helen Young.

I have actually noticed in the last two weeks a very slight increase
in the appearance of synoptic charts- especially local TV

It would seem a fairly decent point to make that the UKMO have a
spokesperson to comment on severe weather matters or indeed weather matters
per se. The truth is that the listeners probably take the Corbyn line as
from the MO. The fault may lie with the fact that no MO person was prepared
to comment and so they went to the bottom of the "folk to speak to about
weather" pile.

I notice that the majority of weather related articles in the papers I read
tend to have spokespeople from interest groups more often than not, mainly
because they will pick up the phone and speak - it leads to a distortion of
the facts. Just who is responsible at the UKMO for dealing with media
enquiries and what is their brief?

I have noticed this although I put it down to the fact that we have had
some proper Atlantic lows over the last week or so that look more
'exciting' on the charts, rather than the more non-descript looking
typical summer low.
