Default Finland recovering after Wednesday storm

The low pressure earlier discussed in Björn Sörheim's thread caused
unusually widespread forest damage mainly in southwestern Finland.
40 000 homes lost electricity (due to trees falling on powerlines).

Now most of the damage has been repaired, but it has not been fun for
these people to prepare Christmas meal without electricity. (Gas ovens
are very, very rare outside of biggest towns; luckily most of the
detached houses have a fireplace and firewood stored for the sauna.)

"Our Michael Fish" Seija Paasonen said on Wednesday, that she cannot
remember previous time when there was simultaneously a storm warning at
all coastal areas, warning for unusually strong wind at land areas _and_
a warning of difficult driving conditions in entire Finland.

Difficult driving conditions! Well Elena, I certainly didn't appreciate our
take off from Rovaniemi on Wednesday evening in a blizzard.

I bet you were glad it was dark then?

What sort of dimwit goes north for the winter?

Don't answer that.

I think yours was among the last flights which took off, they cancelled
some of the Rovaniemi flights that night.

Despite all the snow and drifting, were there any travel problems?
Absolutely not. Didn't see a gritter (I assume they don't actually grit), or
snowplough on the roads at all and traffic moved as if it was a clear sunny
day.

You are right, they do not grit too much up there. Sharp sand is used on
pedestrian and bicycle routes, usually just half of the path so that
sleds etc. can be used on the ungritted side. But sand does not stay on
road of car traffic. Salt is of no use when temperatures are below -8C.
