Default Today's model interpretation (1/09/05)

Here is a summary of the latest NWP output for 12z on Monday. Issued 0600z,
1/09/05.

The models are mixed today. Everything's on offer from lows atop the UK, to
cols, to ridges... The GFS was a cold outlier around day 7, suggesting its
solution of an active low to the north isn't well supported. Nonetheless,
it's now looking cooler and wetter for the first half of next week.

ECMWF: http://217.160.75.104/pics/Recm1201.gif
A ridge covers the UK, bringing light winds for all. The winds become
WSW'lies at T+144, followed by more of the same at T+168. By then a low lies
to the north, no doubt bringing cloudy conditions to Scotland and Northern
Ireland.

MetO: http://217.160.75.104/pics/Rukm1201.gif
Light winds and a trough cover the UK, followed by light northerlies at
T+144 as the trough moves very slowly eastwards.

GFS: http://217.160.75.104/pics/Rtavn1201.gif
A shallow trough covers the UK, bringing NW'lies to Scotland and Northern
Ireland, with westerlies for England and Wales. 850hPa temperatures vary
from +3C over NW Scotland to +7C over much of England and Wales. A weak
ridge brings westerlies to England and Wales, with SW'lies elsewhere at
T+144, followed by westerlies for all as a trough moves eastwards at T+168.

GEM: http://217.160.75.104/pics/Rgem1201.gif
The Canadian run shows SW'lies for most, due to a trough over Ireland. The
trough moves eastwards at T+144, leaving the UK under westerlies. SW'lies
move over the UK again at T+168 as another trough crosses Scotland.

GME/DWD:

A low lies over Biscay, bringing easterlies across the UK. A ridge covers
the UK at T+144, with light winds for all.

JMA: http://217.160.75.104/pics/Rjma1201.gif
The Japanese run shows westerlies over the UK, due to a high to the SW and a
low to the NW. The westerlies strengthen over England and Wales at T+144 as
the high declines.

NOGAPS: http://217.160.75.104/pics/Rngp1201.gif
NOGAPS shows a col over the UK with light winds for all. There's little
change for England and Wales at T+144, but a trough brings westerlies to
Scotland and Northern Ireland.

KMA: http://www.kma.go.kr/kma03/gif/g21nh_smsr_120.gif
The Korean run shows a col and light winds over the UK.
