On my soaring page:
http://www.itadvice.co.uk/weatherjack/STARS.htm are a couple of pictures at the very top. The instrument panel will mean something to many of you. John Williams was flying his glider over the Highlands and this shows him climbing in the wave at 500 feet per minute while flying forward at 120 knots. The montage of screen grabs from the Aboyne webcam shows the mountain waves in all their glory. John flew a total distance over 500 kilometres on a quadrilateral route returning to his starting point for an overall average speed of just over 150 km/hr, ie more than 93 mph average. This is probably the fastest glider flight ever made in the UK and illustrates the sheer power of weather. John has a very good glider, but there are higher performance ones. 200 km/hr is not impossible on the right day in the right glider. Jack |
