Would you mind explaining to an ignoramus like me what exactly a distrail is, though? Or point me to a website that explains? I'm sure I've seen something like that before and didn't know what I was looking at. Thanks. ally |

Thanks. ally A distrail (DISsapation TRAIL) is when an aircraft flies through cloud and the hot exhaust gases and / or the turbulence cause the cloud layer to break up, glaciate (and cause a trail of ice crystals) or evaporate. They aren't really that common. There are some more here but I think the top right ond centre left are shadows and not distrails. http://www.geocities.com/milo702000/.../distrails.htm Les -- Les Crossan, Wallsend, Tyne & Wear 54.95N 1.5W Home of the Wallsend StormCam and the Backup USW FAQ - www.uksevereweather.org.uk |

Sounds daft but I saw this happen a while ago. A plane passed through a sheet of cloud - can't remember whether it was Ac or Sc - and formed a distrail. The turbulence thickened the cloud on either side of the cleared track. The original sheet of cloud was dispersing and before long all that was left was the pseudo-contrail composed of the thickened cloud. -- Graham Davis Bracknell |

Back in the spring of 2004, I photographed what appeared to be both contrails and distrails at the same time, and posted here then It is conceivable what appears to be a distrail is a shadow, but the effect is quite unusual. http://www.mtullett.plus.com/17-may-2004/ -- Mike 55.13°N 6.69°W Coleraine posted to uk.sci.weather 01/10/2005 08:26:37 UTC |

I had no idea what it was at the time. http://www.marshallmcgurk.co.uk/stuf...m/distrail.jpg ally |

I'd say that was a distrail of sorts, anybody else? Les -- Les Crossan, Wallsend, Tyne & Wear 54.95N 1.5W Home of the Wallsend StormCam and the Backup USW FAQ - www.uksevereweather.org.uk |
