Fascinating pictures. Would you mind explaining to an ignoramus like me what
exactly a distrail is, though? Or point me to a website that explains? I'm
sure I've seen something like that before and didn't know what I was looking
at.

Thanks.

A distrail (DISsapation TRAIL) is when an aircraft flies through cloud
and the hot exhaust gases and / or the turbulence cause the cloud layer
to break up, glaciate (and cause a trail of ice crystals) or evaporate.
They aren't really that common.

There are some more here but I think the top right ond centre left are
shadows and not distrails.

The usw FAQ has a section on it too: section 2a:11 ( dissipation trails).

Even rarer is when the cloud disperses and all that's left is the distrail!
Sounds daft but I saw this happen a while ago. A plane passed through a
sheet of cloud - can't remember whether it was Ac or Sc - and formed a
distrail. The turbulence thickened the cloud on either side of the cleared
track. The original sheet of cloud was dispersing and before long all that
was left was the pseudo-contrail composed of the thickened cloud.

Back in the spring of 2004, I photographed what appeared to be both
contrails and distrails at the same time, and posted here then It is
conceivable what appears to be a distrail is a shadow, but the effect is
quite unusual.

Ah. I see. Thanks. I've found a photo I took in May 2004: d'you think this
is a distrail? I had no idea what it was at the time.

Something has caused the thinning of the cirrostratus sheet. I'd say
that was a distrail of sorts, anybody else?
