All regions were 1 to 2 degC warmer than average, taking
September as a whole, and much of the country was also drier and sunnier than average. (All the maps and data have already been uploaded to the website, specifically: http://www.climate-uk.com/monpre/0509.htm http://www.climate-uk.com/monthly/0509.htm http://www.climate-uk.com/page2.html http://www.climate-uk.com/graphs/0509.htm http://www.climate-uk.com/graphs/200509.htm etc, etc) Looking at the distribution of pressure at sea-level, the Icelandic Low was displaced far to the northeast of its usual position and was 995mbar in the Barents Sea. A marked trough extended back to Iceland with a just-about-detectable circulation, 1002mbar, near SE Iceland. The Azores High was in situ at 1024mbar, and a strong ridge extended NE across northern France and Germany to a second high centred 1022 mbar over Belarus. The mean flow over the UK was SW-ly, though only weakly so in southern regions. The mean pressure anomaly field was quite weak over the North Atlantic, the British Isles and southern Europe, but there was a strong anomalous SW-ly flow over Scandinavia and northern Russia. The main anomaly centres we -11 mbar east of Spitsbergen +6 mbar near Moscow +6 mbar over western Greenland +3 mbar just NE of the Azores -3 mbar mid-Atlantic at 52N 35W The anomalous flow was weakly SW-ly over central and northern parts of the UK, but with a hint of SE-ly or E-ly in southern districts. CET (provisional) 15.1°C (+1.4 degC wrt 1971-2000) E&W rain (prov) 71.6mm (87%) E&W sun (prov) 157.8 h (109%) CScot T: 13.6°C (+1.3 degC) Scot Rain: 89.2mm (92%) Scot Sun: 106.7 hr (104%) NI T: 13.5°C (+1.1 degC) NI Rain: 71.3mm (83%) NI Sun: 105.1 hr (90%) In the last 100 years, over England and Wales, September 2005 ranked 5th warmest, 46th wettest, and 25th sunniest. Rainfall percentages ranged from 187 at Broadford (Skye) to 25 at Aboyne (Aberdeenshire) -- some rain shadow !! Sunshine percentages ranged from 134 at Ross-on-Wye (Herefs) to 75 at Stornoway (W.Isles). (c) Philip Eden |

Before that, you have to go back to 1961, with 15.2C. -- John Hall "I don't even butter my bread; I consider that cooking." Katherine Cebrian |

Not here it wasn't! In 1999, my average was 14.7C, compared to 16.0C this year! -- Paul Hyett, Cheltenham |
