[WR] Cambridge

1.7C in S.Essex, which seems in line with most of East Anglia. Maybe your
sensor is picking up some strong solar input?

The "storm" - an apology

I WAS WRONG to emphasise the severe weather so
much.

I haven't time to read all the responses but I imagine they all say pretty
much the same. Yes the forecast was wrong, but it was a good...

Brilliant and best post on the subject in my opinion, Stephen. I hope more
people read it whatever their standpoint.

Today's rain forecast was good

So for the South, well done Met Office on the rainfall forecast;
credit where credit is due.

Yep, guess so. Shame really that they were 68 mph out on the wind and 7 degC
on the temp and it would...

to a northerly direction.

Not as bad

I am pleased to see that most people are trying to analyse what the reasons
are for an innaccurate forecast rather than either denying that it was poor
or slagging off the M.O. I'm sure it was the...

Not as bad....

I was under the impression that most of the uncertaintity with this one was
whether the track would give 70mph or 90 mph winds and whether GFS was badly
underplaying things.
If it turns out to be...

Chances of cold diminishing

As often seems to be the case it's been degrading each day as we get towards
T+120 range - the only timeframe in, that means much anyway. It's like
someone is trying to break it to us gently!

Next week's weather summary beginning 11/01/04

I can imagine your saying the same thing around the same date in 1947.

Exactly! Is this some kind of effort to reverse Murphy's Law. Will's doing
his best to give us the best bet but he can't play...

Snow...a year to the day

From memory I think the relatively deep snow was very localised - the
'Thames Corridor effect'. It also wasn't by any means a classic cold
snap with no ice days - I recorded a maximum of 11.8c...

get here. Can't easily see what that's based on at the moment other than
most models showing two or three colder days at...

Memorable winter period coming up

Tom, you should know by now that T+240 is fantasy! However it is always nice
to see that showing lower rather than higher, I agree, and you have tried to
state it cautiously. It also helps some on TWO...

Identical maximum/minimum

We usually get a long thread every year on this subject. Philip or Martin
step in and all becomes clear for about 10 minutes. Then when it happens the
next year I'm still confused.

December Warmer than Average

The confidence in a mean and SD when n30 (in relation to the population
values) is quite low compared with n=30.

Doesn't the variability come into it as well as the population size.

Spectrum, like most!
